Strand Cinema now open!

We're delighted to confirm that your cinema is now open!

Merlin Cinemas’ Strand Cinema in Rhyl, formerly the Vue which closed in early 2025, reopened on Friday 19th December, bringing audiences a programme of new releases and beloved festive classics.

Merlin Cinemas began 35 years ago with the historic single-screen cinema in Penzance, since then, they have saved several traditional cinemas from closure and repurposed a number of other heritage buildings to provide or retain cinemas, literally from Penzance, near Land’s End to Thurso, near John O’Groats.

Before opening, essential work is being carried out to ensure a comfortable visit, with further refurbishment and enhancements continuing over time, marking an exciting period of renewal for this well-known venue.

Situated on Rhyl’s promenade, the cinema has gone by other names since opening in the mid-1990s. Its reopening as Strand Cinema marks a fresh chapter for a town with a proud entertainment heritage.

Families can enjoy affordable ticket prices, starting from £2.50 for older titles and from just £4 for the latest films with a Movie Magic discount card.

Geoff Greaves Director of Merlin Cinemas said “We’re pleased to be able to bring the big screen back to Rhyl. Seeing a film at the cinema with family or friends is a very different experience to watching the film at home. With the latest digital projection and sound, it is more memorable and offers a sense of occasion. With the additional availability of private hires and school screenings, I believe cinema is a valuable social amenity.”

Leader of Denbighshire County Council, Councillor Jason McLellan said: “It’s fantastic to finally see cinema come alive once again in Rhyl thanks to the hard work of Merlin Cinemas with the support of our own officers to finally raise the curtain once again on the building’s screens.

“This is such an important venue for Rhyl with the town’s rich and lengthy cinema history and tradition and coming hot on the heels of the successful opening of Queen’s Market, will be another attraction for residents and visitors alike and an important part of continuing regeneration in our seaside town.

“We are really pleased as well that Merlin has the confidence and vision to invest in Rhyl which has given such a boost to local employment. I wish those working at the cinema the very best in their roles. I would urge local residents and visitors to Rhyl to come and enjoy the big screen from Friday at the Strand as well as backing other great business ventures in the town to ensure their continued success.

Strand Cinema promises a warm welcome this Christmas and a packed programme for the whole family.

We're really excited about bringing cinema back to Rhyl! Big thanks to Denbighshire County Council!
